How GIF compression works
An animated GIF stores every frame as a separate image with a palette of up to 256 colors, so long or large animations quickly grow to many megabytes — too heavy for messengers, forums and email. There are several ways to make one lighter, and this tool combines them.
Reducing the number of colors shrinks each frame; lossy compression allows small pixel differences so similar frames pack better; dropping frames cuts their number; and scaling down to 10–100% makes every frame smaller. Light, medium and strong presets set these options for you, or switch to custom and tune each one. Dithering smooths color transitions but usually makes the file bigger, and lossy compression is not available for GIFs with transparency.
The original and the compressed GIF are shown side by side with their sizes. If the result isn't smaller, the original is kept.
