How to use: JPG to ICO

  1. 1

    Add JPG images

Drop a JPG into the box — a square picture of 256 × 256 or more works best.

  2. 2

    Choose icon sizes

Tick the sizes from 16 to 256 px. Non-square images can be padded or cropped to a square.

  3. 3

    Download the ICO

Get one multi-size .ico file for Windows shortcuts, apps or favicons.

Making an icon from a JPG

An ICO file is a container of small images: Windows uses it for program, folder and shortcut icons, and browsers read favicon.ico to show a site's icon in tabs and bookmarks. One file carries several sizes, so each place gets a version drawn at its own resolution instead of a blurry scaled copy.

JPG photos are rarely square, so decide how to fit them: crop to a square to fill the whole icon with the central part of the picture, or fit with padding to keep the entire image. The padding can stay transparent or be filled with a color of your choice. Select any of the sizes 16, 24, 32, 48, 64, 128 and 256 px; they are all packed into one .ico file as PNG images.

Small icons show very little detail, so a close-up face, a bold logo or a simple symbol works much better than a wide landscape. Check the 16 and 32 px previews before downloading, and you can convert several JPGs at once.

Everything runs locally in your browser — your images are never uploaded to a server.
