Making a PDF smaller
PDFs with scans, photos or embedded fonts easily exceed the attachment limits of email services and the upload limits of online forms and portals. How much a file can shrink depends on what is inside it, so the tool offers four levels.
Light compression is lossless: it removes metadata and repacks the internal objects. Medium and strong re-compress only the photos inside the document, to 150 or 100 DPI, while text, fonts and vector graphics stay untouched — the text remains sharp, selectable and searchable. Charts and screenshots stay lossless and are only scaled down.
Maximum turns every page into a 100 DPI image and gives the smallest file for scans and heavy documents, but the text can no longer be selected. The size before and after is shown, and if the PDF is already well optimized, the original is kept. Password-protected files can be compressed with the maximum level.
Everything runs locally in your browser — your images are never uploaded to a server.
