How PNG compression works
PNG is a lossless format, so it can't be shrunk with a simple quality setting like JPG. The most effective method is color quantization: the image is redrawn with a limited palette of up to 256 colors, and a palette-based PNG takes far less space than one storing millions of colors. This is the same technique used by popular PNG optimizers.
The quality slider sets the size of the palette: lower values mean fewer colors and a smaller file, and at 100% the image is saved without reducing colors. Screenshots, logos, icons and illustrations with flat areas can often be reduced a lot with no visible change, while photos with smooth gradients may show banding at low settings.
Transparency is preserved, so the result still works for logos and web graphics. The panel shows the size before and after and the percentage saved.
Everything runs locally in your browser — your images are never uploaded to a server.
