How AI upscaling works
Ordinary enlargement stretches existing pixels, so a small picture turns soft and blurry. AI upscaling works differently: the Swin2SR super-resolution network has learned what edges, textures and fine detail typically look like and redraws them while increasing the resolution 2× or 4×. It helps to enlarge an old photo, a small picture from the web or a thumbnail for printing or a bigger screen.
The AI mode runs fully in your browser — on the graphics card through WebGPU or on the CPU through WebAssembly. The model is downloaded once and then cached, the image is processed in tiles with a progress indicator, and nothing is uploaded. For very large images, Fast mode uses classic high-quality resampling with light sharpening and is much quicker.
