What works on Pinterest

Pinterest is a visual search engine: people browse a grid of images and save ideas to boards. The recommended pin is a 1000×1500 vertical image with a 2:3 ratio, which takes up more space in the grid than a square. Square 1000×1000 pins also work, and the 600×600 canvas is meant for board covers.

Pins are often seen at a small size on phones, so use a large, clear title overlay, a strong photo and plenty of contrast, and keep generous margins around the text. A small logo or website name helps when the pin is saved and shared far from its original link. Step-by-step guides, recipes and before-and-after images are natural formats for tall pins.

Pick one of eight designs, type a headline, subtitle and a short line such as your website, then choose a font, colors or a gradient and add your own photo, which you can drag and zoom right on the preview. Safe-zone guides show what gets cropped or covered, and they are never exported. Download a PNG or JPG at the exact pixel size, or press Open in editor to keep working on layers in the photo editor.
