Reducing JPG size
JPG is a lossy format: it splits the picture into small blocks and stores fewer fine color details, which is why photos compress so well. The quality setting controls how much is discarded. Phones and cameras often save JPGs at a very high quality, so recompressing them at 75–85% can make the file much smaller with no difference visible on screen.
Move the slider and watch the estimated size next to the original size and the percentage saved. Below about 50%, blocky artifacts appear around sharp edges and in smooth skies, so check the preview before using very low values.
Any image you open is saved as JPG, which is a quick way to make a heavy PNG photo lighter. JPG has no transparency, so transparent areas become white.
