How sharpening works
Sharpening does not add detail the camera never captured. It increases contrast along edges, so the boundary between a light and a dark area becomes more distinct and the eye reads the picture as crisper. This tool uses an unsharp-mask style filter, the same principle desktop editors rely on.
It helps with photos that are slightly soft from a basic lens, light camera shake or resizing, and with pictures that will be printed or shrunk for the web, where fine texture tends to fade. Start low: 20–40% is often enough, while high values create bright halos around edges and exaggerate noise.
Heavy motion blur or missed focus cannot be fixed by sharpening. For small, low-resolution pictures the AI upscaler gives better results, because it rebuilds detail while enlarging.
